Building relationships is a core skill for any trainee solicitor. Whether you’re at an event, meeting a trainee cohort, or speaking with a partner, the ability to start and sustain meaningful conversations can set you apart. Many trainee solicitors feel might nervous about what to say, but the truth is, engaging and memorable conversations often start with thoughtful questions.

General/ Ice Breakers
- Tell me about you?
- What’s a personal passion project you are working on?
- What was the highlight of your day (or week)?
- I’m grabbing some water, does anyone want any water? (substitute for tea/ coffee. Do not assume everyone drink alcohol if alcohol is being served)
- Can you recommend any good Indian food spots in the area? (Substitute Indian for any specific cuisine, dessert, drink, etc.).
Current trends & Insights
- What skills do you believe will be in demand for the next generation of solicitors?
- What’s one lesson from a client interaction that stayed with you? (make it clear you are not looking for client name or any specific non public information)
- How do you think technology is changing the legal landscape?
- How do you keep up with legal developments in your area?

Final Thoughts
- Listen actively: Don’t just fire off questions. Show genuine interest in the response.
- Find common ground: If someone mentions an interest that overlaps with yours, share your perspective.
- Adapt to context: Use career related prompts in professional settings and lighter ones in social situations.
- Don’t network, instead find your people
- Have interesting stories of your own to share when someone asks you questions
- When I was working on my Product Podcast, one of my favorite questions to ask guests was “what is something about you that I cannot Google?.” A few guests told me afterwards that the question got them thinking and they enjoyed that question.
