Study Smarter Not Longer

Studying Smarter This Summer

Studying Smarter This Summer starts with the right strategy. Learn to manage time, & energy, especially when life gets busy.

Summer brings longer days, but somehow less time. Between family commitments, birthday celebrations, and the occasional BBQ, your study schedule can quickly unravel. If you’re preparing for the SQE, you already know the material is extensive, and the pressure is real.

But here’s the mindset shift you need: purpose has to be bigger than the pain.

When the discomfort of turning down a social invitation or waking up early feels overwhelming, reconnect with why you started. That clarity is your anchor.

You don’t need five hour study blocks to make meaningful progress. Research consistently shows that spaced repetition and active recall outperform passive reading every time.

Active recall and spaced repetition are two of the most evidence-backed study techniques available. Instead of passively re-reading notes, active recall forces your brain to retrieve information, through practice questions, self-testing, or closing your notes and writing down everything you remember. This struggle to retrieve is exactly what strengthens long-term memory. Spaced repetition builds on this by revisiting material at strategically increasing intervals, so rather than cramming a topic once, you return to it just as you’re about to forget it. For SQE candidates working through the Functioning Legal Knowledge areas, combining both techniques means you’re not just recognizing the law, you’re genuinely retaining it under exam conditions.

Here’s how to apply that this summer:

  • Micro-sessions work. 25–30 minutes of focused revision using the Pomodoro Technique beats an unfocused afternoon. Use commutes, lunch breaks, and waiting times.
  • Active recall over re-reading. Test yourself on FLK topics rather than simply highlighting notes.
  • Prioritize weak areas first. Use your practice results to target gaps, not comfort zones.
  • Temptation bundling. Pair studying with something you enjoy, revise at your favorite café, or listen to SQE podcasts on a summer walk.
  • Protect one consistent slot daily. Even 45 minutes at the same time each day builds unstoppable momentum.

Everyone learns differently find how you study best.

Protect the Bigger Picture

Missing one BBQ won’t derail your summer. Missing consistent study will affect your results. Be selective, not absent, socialize intentionally and study purposefully.

The SQE is temporary. The qualification is permanent.

Stay consistent, stay connected to your purpose, and the summer won’t beat you, you’ll beat it.
