Losing trust in a Instant

Building trust can take years to build, however, one act of broken confidence can lead to losing trust in an instant. Trust is everything.

Recently I spoke to a friend who told me an interesting story. For months, my friend and their business partner steadily built a strong, collaborative working relationship. One grounded in trust, open communication, and shared goals.

The business partner cracked that foundation abruptly one afternoon when my friend caught them in a lie they knew was untrue. In that moment, the trust my friend had invested disappeared. It wasn’t the first lie either.

After working side by side toward common objectives, discovering that the partner chose to prioritize their own agenda over honesty and collaboration fundamentally shifted the dynamic.

The deliberate lies showed that they did not value the partnership equally, making my friend question the integrity of the relationship moving forward.

Losing trust in a instant: 3 lessons

3 lessons to take from this, especially for anyone early in their legal career, is simple:

1. Be consistent, not impressive. Big gestures don’t build trust. Reliable, quiet consistency does.

2. Guard confidences fiercely. In law, information is everything. How you handle what someone tells you privately defines your reputation.

3. Own your mistakes early. Trying to hide a problem almost always makes it worse. Raising your hand early is uncomfortable but trust-building.

Trust takes time

Trust takes time. It grows slowly through small actions, shared goals, and consistent behavior. When we work with someone day after day, we start to believe in their intentions. We assume they value the relationship as much as we do. That belief becomes the foundation for collaboration. It becomes the quiet engine that keeps progress moving.

But trust is fragile. It can break in a single moment.

One act of deception can undo months of steady work. A lie, even a small one, sends a clear message. It tells us that the other person values their own agenda more than honesty. It shows that the relationship is not equal. And once that realization hits, everything changes.

When trust breaks, it breaks fast. The shift is instant. The mind starts replaying past conversations. Doubt creeps in. Questions appear. What else wasn’t true? What else was hidden? The partnership that once felt strong now feels uncertain. The energy that once fueled collaboration turns into caution.

This is why trust matters so much in professional relationships. It is not just a “nice to have.” It is the core of effective teamwork. Without trust, communication becomes guarded. Decisions slow down. Creativity fades. People stop sharing ideas because they no longer feel safe doing so.

Building trust requires intention. It requires honesty, even when honesty is uncomfortable. It requires transparency, even when transparency slows things down. Most of all, it requires respect for the other person’s goals, time, and effort.

Losing trust, however, requires almost nothing. One careless choice. One self serving decision. One moment where integrity is pushed aside.

The lesson is simple but powerful: protect trust like it’s your most valuable asset. Because it is. Once broken, it rarely returns in the same form. And even when it does, the cracks remain.

In your SQE journey and in any professional path, trust will shape your progress more than skill alone. Build it with care. Guard it with intention. And never underestimate how quickly it can disappear.
